the majority of issues closed lower than they opened today. like a swarm of black candles came over the market this afternoon. strength was found in an odd mix of defensive and beta. for example, the 7 symbols (out of 40) in the ETF index that closed higher than they opened were EWW, EWY, EWZ, XLK, XLP, XLU, XLV.
